What PASE Did During Summer Sophomore Shares Internship
|
By Michelle Cua Having an internship is a wonderful experience. I have learned a lot from my environment and from the people who I work with. I have the opportunity to see what real-life work is like and what the organization is about. During my senior year in high school, I applied for a scholarship offered by the Society of Women Engineers. One of the many scholarship awards was an internship with Hewlett Packard and $500. This was how I received my internship with HP. Hewlett Packard is one of the largest computer companies in the world. You might own one of their high quality printers, just one of the items in a fine line of products they have available. The internship program is called SEED - Student Experience Education Development. The greatest advantage of the SEED program is that I have a mentor. My mentor guides me through the entire internship experience. She is a wonderful person who is always available to answer any of my questions. Without her, I would be a little lost in the whole HP world. I have worked with my mentor and my team since that summer before freshman year here in UC Davis. Today, I am working part-time during school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, nine hours a week, during the month of October. The HP site is located in Roseville, 30 minutes from Davis. Currently, I am helping the software engineering team regarding critical software testing. The software is an install wizard for network printers. Because of my experience at HP, I am thinking of emphasizing in networking for my Computer Engineering degree. Testing includes the validation of correct behavior and functionality in a variety of operating systems and environments. I also assist in documentation of important reports and creating disk images and CDs for releasing products. The team I work with is great. They know when to be serious with work and when to be fun. Every week, there is a technical meeting on Thursday where the team gets together and gives their weekly updates of what each person has accomplished. We go over our progress in implementation and testing. On the last Friday of the month, the whole office celebrates Fun Friday with free desserts, drinks, and games. When performing my duties at work, it is important that I do my very best. By showing them my dedication and hard work, they might extend an offer to work again. So, I must keep working hard, so I can continue to work at HP. © HP, Hewlett-Packard, and JetDirect are trademarks of
