What PASE Did During Summer Vacation

By Vanessa Villas

During the summer, the members of PASE were relatively busy. Some of us went to summer school. Some of us went to work. And still, others of us did all that and more. But as busy as life seemed to be, the members of PASE's board along with friends and alumni were able to come together and meet to make plans and raise some money for PASE this year.

This summer, PASErs, past and present, got together for our annual retreat. We spent 2 days and 2 nights in a cabin in the woods near Guerneville, CA. It was here that we tried to plan what we would present in our meetings this year and what kind of events we'd like to hold. This was also the place where Austin PASEr was born. But it wasn't all work and no play for us PASErs. We brought along mahjong, chess, and jenga to play during our stay in the mountains and we watched Die Hard and other shows on TV since the cabin had cable. We even spent one afternoon by the Russian River playing volleyball, horseshoes, and skipping rocks. There was even a little canoeing and swimming going on, but I'll leave that story to Mark, Humboldt, Darius, and Raymond. Hopefully, they'll tell you of their little adventure.

Another thing that some of us PASErs did this summer was fundraise at Paramount's Great America. For three days in September, we worked as boosters in the merchandising and game departments at PGA and I am surprised to say that it was really fun. I always thought working at an amusement park would be hot, tiring, and absolutely no fun because my friends used to always complain about Marine World (I'm from Vallejo). But then again, I only had to work two of those three days and not a whole summer. My first day at PGA, I got to work in the Nickelodeon candy store and was told to sample as much candy as I could, very cool for a girl with a sweet tooth. The second day I worked games and had a lot of fun trying to help people trade in the tickets they won on the games for cool stuff. But what made my time as a booster the most fun, besides being lucky enough to work with my friends, was watching the kids. It was really interesting seeing kids try to convince their parents that 1/4 lb. bag of candy at 11 in the morning was a good idea. And there was this cute little girl, about three years old, having the hardest time trying to choose between a new dress and a gummi worm.

The other board members probably have there own stories about the retreat and PGA, but this was my article so you got to hear some of mine. If you'd like to hear anyone else's, just ask around and I'm sure they'd love to fill you in. And maybe when we go on our next retreat or work as boosters again some of you will come along and join the fun. What PASE did this summer was work hard and have a good time.
